Engage to Change

no retreat

always engage

if not

what’s the point?

we all change the world

everyday

you must choose

construct or destruct

reject isolationism

embrace the world

engage if not change

all grains of sand have value

do right to them

while hanging in the balance

of the reality of life

when you turn and look back

what do you see?

what good am I

if I retreat from reality

ignoring your pain

turning my back while you die

what qualities do we espouse?

most of the time

some of the time

Mastering Self

masters, wise men, fools

what's the difference?

who makes the rules?

coz' they get broken eventually

that's their appeal

masters, be at war or peace

like life

they build up and break down

leaving life or death

in their wake

got nothing to live up to

even when they fail

 is paradise in hell

has heaven been on earth?

time will tell

has it been worth it

what is your life worth?

resist dismiss

this constant struggle

an eternal youthful mind

constantly engaging

positively life affirming

existence is what

is at stake

The Last Word

poets writers journalists

standing back

pens poised

prophesy awaits

philosophize with your pens

write it all

unabashed

always the last word

the might of graphite

bleeding gray

stronger than steel

but oh so fragile

poets down there

write nothing at all

just stand backs to the wall

waiting for words to tumble

pens and swords

a clash of unequal minds

both carry lead

of a different weight

although one is ….

eternal

In Memoriam

My father would have been 83 today, sadly he passed away 4 years ago (can’t believe it’s so long without him). I wrote this poem last year on his birthday, I still miss him, and have been thinking about him a lot of late. The loss of a parent who was dearly loved leaves a pain that always lingers. “My Fathers House” by Bruce Springsteen was playing as I wrote this eulogy last year.

fathers are refuge from the storms of life

when that safe port passes on

when the lighthouse fades

all that is left are the memories

memories never fade

they are never forgotten or passed over

they remain

memories shine through the mists of time

even when the lights fade and no one lives there

they remain constant, eternal not ethereal

these remain, never forgotten

what was once real is now no longer

the reminders of your love do not fade

they remain

through the years we walked different paths

they diverged and merged over the years

at the end they had become one

constant reminders of our togetherness

unconditional love learnt

remains

Becoming Me

daily struggle of avoidance

under the radar over the hedge

silence, solitude

disappearing into other worlds

whilst

mired in this one

fast approaching fears

decisions pending

conscience or crowd

object or be subjected

fight or flight

kill, heal, pray

dream within a dream

hoping it never ends

but oh to soon

boys become men

awake, breathing, still dreaming

failing

dreaming of a hope once virtuous

now lost

seeking, searching

always asking

but why?

why me?

ah yes

becoming me

never ends

why should it?

Never Ending

day dons

nights cloak

becomes

the turncoat

unfurling

across the land

advancing

relentlessly

without end

devouring all

within its dark maw

victory is short lived

light returns

...

but for how long

Closer

closer to edge

everyday now

any day now

it draws nigh

into the void

how far

how high

dare we go beyond

the realm

dare to dream

possibilities exist

its there

within our grasp

closer and closer every day …

Our Mortal Coil

this life

this mortal coil

to be or to live

shedding this toil

just how long is the life

we choose to live

close your eyes and dream

if you dare

gaze through the window

what looks back

in the stain-glass

an image

a reflection

or

nothingness

look beyond the window

into the distance

at our own possibilities

over the horizon

beyond the veil

a probable future

awaits
........

tear that veil

Ode to My Beloved

you lift me up

and set me down

with you

life is rich

without you

its not life

this life

an another

can we expect more

stars are raining down

as your hair

brushes the sky

close your eyes

and dream

if you dare

this life

and then the next.

into the sunset

Answers in the Wind

it's all just

blowing in the wind

when cowls fly

and doves scrape the sky

angry white horses

relentlessly throw themselves

against the sand

time is like mist

sweeping over the mountains

swirling ….

to and fro

its all a daze

as shadows become real

and..

questions are answered

when the wind blows
