My Southern Cross

you’ll always be my only guiding light

even when there is no star in sight

perfect love embracing all of me

you give me roots and wings

my guiding star shining bright

cut and polished me like a gem

transcending time and space

anchored to you through time

as we slip away into the night

now, is always wrapped around you

oh remind me to breathe

as time flies by

A poem for my love on her birthday – 27 December

in every leaf that trembles

as in every grain of sand

this fragile beauty brings balance

resonating a harmonious chord

spreading out as ripples

across the universe of our lives

may you always prosper and blossom

continuing to see beauty in every grain of sand

and flower that blooms

for this year and the next that will always follow

bringing a revived catalyst for growth

to my life, our love, and your life

The Solace in the Silence

Listening to the guitar playing of David Gilmour makes me appreciate the beauty of silence, the silent (pauses) between his playing. The silence in-between his chords, when he plays a chord… strums/plucks the string/s … and then waits….. that waiting for the next chord to me is at times the best part of his music. That for me is what makes Gilmour such a magnificent guitarist, to me he is the master of the sublime and the understated. To make a statement or impression one does not need to make a noise, neither does one as a guitarist need to rip, shred or wail.

The pause resonates, this then took my mind off on one of its (many) tangents. 🙂

The importance of the unsaid versus the said, the importance of what is not said, in the moments of silence. Interestingly my favourite Pink Floyd album is Wish You Were Here, and it is ironic, that the album explores themes of absence (silence). The lyrics encompass Roger Waters’ feelings of alienation from other people, notably within the band and the tension that they were experiencing.

Well back to my musings of the silence between the chords and let’s explore this dynamic in life; let’s explore how the silent conversations can benefit our relationships and way of life. The comfort of being in someone’s presence and just being … silent …. the silent conversations we have with a loved one or close friend. This silence does not alienate, but brings us closer together, we find comfort, solace in the silence. The importance of silence in conversation can carry more weight than the spoken word.

The silence echoes around the enclosed walls of our minds, encouraging us to break down the alienation and find solace in the silence, and learn the importance of being silent, quiet … amongst those we feel close too, and then taking this silence out into the rushed and frenetic world in which we live. This can help us to slow down in the fast-paced world we live in, for when speed is king, anyone or anything that gets in our way, that slows us down, becomes an enemy. Thanks to speed, we are living in the age of rage. That too is ironic, the fast pace of life alienates more than the comfort we can find in silence.

Just Another 5 Minutes

the morning light slowly pushes the shadows away

the remains of the night gently recede

yet we cling to the warmth that remains

entwined in our slumbers we hold firm

to another 5 minutes

hushed whispers and the rise and fall as we breath

hands holding firm to the sands of time

to slow down what will eventually be

till then we mould as one

for another 5 minutes

a new day must eventually begin

till then, we press in and on

entwined as one

delaying this moment

for just another 5 minutes … please

Creating Beauty

that which disturbs, irritates

out of this intrusion our natural defence

must be to create beauty

this irritation layered upon our minds

must drag out the lustre of the nacre

and repeatedly caress

layer upon layer

from every grain of sand, let beauty emerge

pearls from pain, washed by tears

this fragile beauty brings balance

becoming a catalyst to growth

allow the weeds of yesteryear

to become the flowers of indulgence

as a new wonderous life emerges

This Serendipitous Life

that elusive gift is no longer lost

to find what was never lost but is now found

that is indeed one of life’s mysteries

but,

to those who dare and persist

sands of time will never end

their pathway becomes self-evident

and,

passions are no longer that elusive frontier

that which is valued becomes our truth

with no limits or boundaries

may the sands never run out in this hourglass

Just Linger

love is beauty wrapped

in the seconds of one’s life

stop, linger longer

taste, savour

and just breathe

ensuring this moment in time

is frozen and not forsaken

be enfolded, firmly,

yet with tenderness

just linger and be seen

Public Poetry Reading

Reading a few of my poems at an arts festival this weekend … excited, nervous, unsure … first time I will be reading my poems in a public domain, exposing my thoughts, emotions and journey to strangers, in person. Totally different feeling from posting them online or reading to a friend now and again. Possibly the next step in me moving into a more “serious” position on my writings.  😱📖🤔

Selected 5 poems to read (doing some practice readings) , will gauge the audience a see how many they can handle.

Lost Shadows of Reticence

at the centre of his imagination
all is blurred or veiled
this continual tussle between
reveal or shadow

inevitably creating a journey of suspense
allowing for at times,
no resolution or closure
retreating into these lost shadows

this private reticence
of an untold, nay oft told story
out of sight, off camera
might become an annoyance

but is it not the journey
rather than that, never reached destination
that casts the longer shadow
and matters more?

Expectations of …..

burdens weighing you down

solitude standing wounded bruised

will never be the same again

yet, struggling to remain

this warrior struggles to remain relevant

is there beauty in the dissonance?

compassion doomed to atrophy

but yet expectations remain

father time approaches

veiled with the cloaked of deceit

bearing down as one avoids

that stinging gift

I am awake it’s not over

expectations of invincibility despite

having had enough

lurching back into the fray

that next rubicon beckons

cold helpless alone

coming together joining as one

together we’ll cross the river
