Walking Among Tombstones

fields of tombstones standing in silent watch

appearing as a living breathing entity

it’s about death,

but of course, life gives death meaning

the sublime beauty of repeating imagery

stretching to infinity

yet I’m lost in my own finite world

silence lingers in the air as the dust settles

why are we here, do we exist?

as I gaze ahead, I ponder what I leave behind

what dust of me remains, if even

but yet, here I stand with the remains

 still alive

Why ?

memories of dark days

days of remembering

why?

the loss of belonging

of longing...

why?

A Life Discarded

rolling highways of aging steel

spikes of steel arching upwards

stretching from here to wherever

even possibly infinity

remnants of a life discarded

frantically clinging to rusted spikes

as the blustery wind plucks and rips

desperately trying to set them free

these cast aside fragments

finally break free to fly

but only to be caught

by yet another highway of steel

which proceeds to agonisingly

shred, rip, tear

more of its life away

right down to the marrow

Sunrise Across The Congo

Sunrise in the Southern DRC this week whilst driving to work …. stunning silhouettes ..

Thick mist at work, with the sun battling to shine through ….

Hopefully this all bodes well for peace and stability in this region …..

The Forgotten Soldier

history written by the victorious

remembered by the soldier

forgotten by all

battered, bruised, discarded

honour cast aside

no medals for the forgotten warrior

once forgotten

memories now return

new wounds emerge

new scars

new pain and guilt

but still society forgets

wars once popular

now become an anathema

silence abounds

but the memories remain

history written in black

but remembered in blood

history written in scars

survives beyond the fading text

politicians write the history

soldiers carry the weight of that history

Shadows of My Mind

 skittish shadows, flirting

with the smoke filled

shadows of my mind

and still my mind burns

like cheap whisky

coursing down my throat

while the beckoning, cavernous

maw of blackness approaches

just another hungry mouth

that needs to feed

at the trough

of my existence

My Poetry is …..

neither a shout

nor a scream

not a whimper

or a whisper

….....

but an eruption

of emotion

from within

….......

once released

it plots its own path

and passion

towards darkness

or light
...

Inspiration Comes Knocking

It came knocking and I opened the door and welcomed it with open arms. Inspiration brought friends, as I have been diving into the classics of late; Milton, Shelley, Poe, Goethe and then the music of Carl Orff and the more recent music of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and The Alan Parsons Project. From this mish-mash, has come a torrent of thoughts, ideas, annotations and my ideas Journal is looking very busy and messy these past few days … 🙂

I am putting the finishing touches to a few poems and I am for the first time in awhile excited about this new work that I am putting out, it is (IMO) quite a different style of writing …

So watch this space … it might be a busy few days/weeks that lie ahead, plus I have a few pressing editorial deadlines :O

Ambulance Today – Summer Edition 2018

The Summer Edition for 2018, has hit the shelves, its live now in Ambulance Today. Click on the link below to download and read the magazine and my article on page 46 & 47, where I ask more questions than provide answers.

The Cost Of Service

Ambulance Today – Summer Edition 2018

Besides the above article, the magazine is littered with so many other good reads – the article on the wound clotting product – WoundClot is very interesting, and the expansion of EMS in South America looks exciting, and there is so much more … enjoy the read.

The article I penned on The Cost of Service is very close to my heart and mind, after 34 years in EMS. For those who would love to chat further about the cost of service, PTSD and depression, please feel free to chat to me via my e-mail address or in the thread beneath this post.

To all the followers of this page, if you want to see an article written about any specific aspect of Emergency Care on the African continent, or get me to interview a key role player, drop me a mail. Equally, if you have any news items you would like us to run either in our magazine or on our daily-updated global ambulance news website please make contact.

To my fellow passionate EMS friends across the world, I trust you are enjoying this journey, as we continue to explore this fascinating continent. Till then be safe out there and stay passionate – Enjoy!

The Gypsy

a weary traveller, searching

along the unfurling winding road

for the next place of refuge

the cold, worn, faded sheets

reflecting stages of life

heart and mind on the move

carrying minimal baggage

unpacking as we move along

no hat, no house

the empty spaces I've roamed

searching for a home

a stone with no moss

only seeking

……

shelter from a storm
