Mist of War

Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war – Otto van Bismarck

With all the craziness in the world at present, and ongoing conflicts and aggressive rhetoric from certain leaders …. maybe just maybe there will be less conflicts, if they themselves had to do the fighting….

the red mist descends overall

it’s to dark to see

as the eyes glaze over

into that 1000 yard stare

as the raging red rivers flow

darkness draws nigh

the veil is torn

the pathway opens on high

yes, I have seen the world

not sure which one awaits

I am coming, screams death

not a second to soon

for we have learnt nothing

from the tragic cycle of history

which is oft repeated

Feeling Proud

Feeling very proud at present, I am embarking on another new writing adventure, I have been appointed as the Africa editor for the UK based EMS publication – Ambulance Today, circulation includes, Europe, Canada, the Pacific Rim and now Africa.

At Ambulance Today we are always looking to expand our ambulance news coverage to different parts of the globe, which is why we are proud to launch our new segment ‘From the Africa Desk’ and introduce our Africa Editor, Michael Emmerich.

The Africa Quarterly editorial, that I will be writing, will cover the main regions in Africa, with opinion pieces from various regional role players. Our focus will be on the key regions across the continent; East, West, Central, Sub Sahara and North Africa. I will explore key and relevant NGO’s and the vital role that they play in bringing medicine and emergency medicine to the continent. The first article will be in the Summer Edition (UK Summer), which is in the next week 🙂

To all the medical people who follow this page, if you have any ideas for special feature articles on ambulance care in any part of Africa drop me a mail. Equally, if you have any news items you would like  us to run either in our magazine or on our daily-updated global ambulance news website make contact.

To my fellow passionate EMS friends across the world, I trust you will walk this continent with me as we delve deeper into the respective regions in future articles. Till then be safe out there and stay passionate.

Mastering Self

masters, wise men, fools

what's the difference?

who makes the rules?

coz' they get broken eventually

that's their appeal

masters, be at war or peace

like life

they build up and break down

leaving life or death

in their wake

got nothing to live up to

even when they fail

 is paradise in hell

has heaven been on earth?

time will tell

has it been worth it

what is your life worth?

resist dismiss

this constant struggle

an eternal youthful mind

constantly engaging

positively life affirming

existence is what

is at stake

Paranoid, but Alive

a natural state of perception

acknowledging

that possible

negative truth

of our universe

behind its mask

lies that face of decay

hiding

always ready

paranoia declares

the end result

of all eventuality

is death

intimacy with death

the essence of creative thinking

fuels our passion

tending not to be life-affirming

rather, a

negative potential

taking to its logical conclusion

life in its abundance

that’s the secret

to life eternal

paranoia

that’s how we do it

In Whose Name?

the evil that men do

in the name of a god

is not in god’s name

but rather

evil enacted

in their name

hypocrisy prevails

in whose name?

some faceless god?

no…….

just greed

and the face on the lucre

the victorious

the arrogant

the ungodly

there is no god of the righteous

only the greedy

might is not always right

but greed trumps

"in god's name"

is now a lament of regret

what have we become

Herd Stupidity

ignorance, wisdom

two sides of the same sword

conviction, divine certainty

lends people

the will to believe

all sorts of atrocities

under some banner

herd stupidity

encourages partaking

of the kool aid,

seemingly wise people

desirous of ignorance

choosing to not see

what is evident

escape from the herd

is the only choice

to recover

ones senses

slowly,

after all

the easiest person to fool

is none other

 but yourself

Peace in our Time

peace in our time

para bellum

the edge of a precipice

staring into the abyss

what stares back

hard times, hard rain

grubby hands hold the sticks

drummer boys beat the drum

tapping out the march

marching to a different beat

call for peace, prepare for war

closer to midnight

solitary voice of a person

claiming to be human

rings out

determined to end the war

before it starts

enough trouble

for whose life time

statesmen endeavouring

manage, contain war

others demand

violence, war is justified

the service of some greater good

power, greed, economics

you decide

war and peace remain

two sides of the same coin

to some

world without conflict

remains unthinkable

war must be mankind’s enemy

generation to generation

conscription and destruction

blood, bullets, bombs

time in pieces

peace love compassion understanding

values demanding a voice

are we ready

prepare for war

fight for peace

that elusive contradictory condition

peace in our time

make it real!

Lies & Truth

if at first you don’t succeed

lie, lie and lie again

said the politician

all lies

eventually become truth

if truth be told

lies become truth

if told oft enough

all lies

eventually trump truth

knowledge is more difficult

to beat than faith

repeat the lie often enough

it can be crowned

as politics or religion

more the fool is the teller

even he starts to believe

that absurdity

can be believed

as always

twixt and twain

lies and damned lies

becoming truth

A Day (Life) of Remembrance

“Nonintervention does not mean that nothing happens.

It means that something else happens.”
Christopher Hitchens

On this day when we remember the fallen, lets gave pause for thought, to the boys forced to become men, to become killers. In silent contemplation, I at times shout out to my silence; why do we discard our best and brightest to senseless conflicts. The hopes and disappointments of generations of young (mostly) men/boys are always dashed at the altar of political expedience and greed. Young men fighting old men’s wars. The First World War poets have always stuck a deep chord on my soul and I reread the poems and contemplate deeply on the what, why, how and the loss. The poetry of Owen, Rosenberg, Blunden, Gurney and Sassoon are those that I turn to when I need to pause and think, why is this world so fucked up?

Consequently, I have put my pen to writing about war, and the effect it has had on me; as who served, and on our youth and the broader society. Here are some of the poems I have written with a precise of what inspired/motivated me to to put pen to paper. Not in the same league as Owen and Sassoon, but hopefully it will cause you dear reader, to pause, and reflect as to where we are going in this crazy world.

The Forgotten Soldier

Upon reflecting on my time in the military/war as an Ops Medic, my mind flitted around the war, in which I was involved, and its unpopularity (in my opinion) and the baggage that one carries after the fact. The PTSD that soldiers carry with them for life, but that society has long forgotten, especially if the war was unpopular. Sting said: “History will teach us nothing” in some respects he is true.

Fuck War

The passing of Muhammad Ali gave me pause for reflection on the issues of war, forcible conscription and all that goes with it, he went to prison rather than be drafted to serve in Vietnam. I then reflected back on my time when I was forcibly conscripted in 1981 and my battle with the process of all that is war.

My Enemy is My Friend

This arose from a dream I had, which then made me think back to a Wilfred Owen poem I read, “Strange Meeting”. Upon further reflection I cast my mind back to when I was an Ops Medic in the bush war in 1981/82 and the time I spent treating patients at the main POW camp in the now Namibia. My thought process then meandered through a montage of past present and future. It was a difficult poem to write but the words just spilled out once I began.

White Feathers

Penned this on the International day of Peace in Sept this year.                                                 To quote John Lennon: Give Peace a chance.
