Free Fall

into the distance I gaze

a flight of fancy awaits

with wings spread

soaring towards the sun

like Icarus and Lucifer

I thought, I thought of everything

warning lights ignored

navigator long since departed

on a wing and a prayer

flying to close to the sun

flew to high and to soon

it’s all melting away

I’m now freefallin’

like those before me

hell to heaven

a fall from grace

an angel awaits

enfolded by ruffled feathered wings

healing my wounds

with time

The Last Word

poets writers journalists

standing back

pens poised

prophesy awaits

philosophize with your pens

write it all

unabashed

always the last word

the might of graphite

bleeding gray

stronger than steel

but oh so fragile

poets down there

write nothing at all

just stand backs to the wall

waiting for words to tumble

pens and swords

a clash of unequal minds

both carry lead

of a different weight

although one is ….

eternal

Blurred Lines

truth at the flip of a coin

heads or tails

you still lose

do not adjust your set

even if it is

out of focus

blurred lines

merging into a gray morass

indecipherable enigma's

everything

and next to nothing

reality is transformed

fact becomes fiction

life becomes reality

alternate is the new the norm

art is no more

drink and feast

for tomorrow you die

Over the Horizon

what lies over the horizon

what is at the end of the road

a light?

an escape?

a void?

a sigh

of relief

or an expectation

overcome with emotion

weak at the knees

weak

must be strong

stand tall

breath deep

savour the end

the light rapidly advances

emerging into.....

A Matter of Life

air goes in and out

blood goes round and round

that says the medic

keeps you alive

in sickness and death

illness and injury

not all goes as it should

this is well noted

blood and guts

sickness and death

that last …..

potential breath

affirms our quest

intimacy with death

fuels our passion

in life in its abundance

ours

and yours …

the next patient

In Whose Name?

the evil that men do

in the name of a god

is not in god’s name

but rather

evil enacted

in their name

hypocrisy prevails

in whose name?

some faceless god?

no…….

just greed

and the face on the lucre

the victorious

the arrogant

the ungodly

there is no god of the righteous

only the greedy

might is not always right

but greed trumps

"in god's name"

is now a lament of regret

what have we become

Herd Stupidity

ignorance, wisdom

two sides of the same sword

conviction, divine certainty

lends people

the will to believe

all sorts of atrocities

under some banner

herd stupidity

encourages partaking

of the kool aid,

seemingly wise people

desirous of ignorance

choosing to not see

what is evident

escape from the herd

is the only choice

to recover

ones senses

slowly,

after all

the easiest person to fool

is none other

 but yourself

Under Darkened Eaves

through a veil I barely see

darkness shrouding the land

shuttered windows

obstruct the view

doors firmly closed

darkened eaves hold secrets

no one drops by

there is no need

the net was my safe haven

but safety net no more

with partially opened doors

shutters always ajar

tabs can reveal more

we keep pretending

that truth is elusive

but no more

a version is always

within one’s grasp

Paradox of Shadows

live on the edge

where shadows nudge

night greets day

dark flees light

past overlooks present

a probable future

life in the penumbra

is a paradox

it is viable

pulling either way

constant conflict

to what end

seeking what

the penumbra?

contradictory interrelated elements

existing simultaneously

persisting for eternity

hither and thither

clawing, dragged back

inexorably, irreversibly

to the core

of darkness

or light

Peace in our Time

peace in our time

para bellum

the edge of a precipice

staring into the abyss

what stares back

hard times, hard rain

grubby hands hold the sticks

drummer boys beat the drum

tapping out the march

marching to a different beat

call for peace, prepare for war

closer to midnight

solitary voice of a person

claiming to be human

rings out

determined to end the war

before it starts

enough trouble

for whose life time

statesmen endeavouring

manage, contain war

others demand

violence, war is justified

the service of some greater good

power, greed, economics

you decide

war and peace remain

two sides of the same coin

to some

world without conflict

remains unthinkable

war must be mankind’s enemy

generation to generation

conscription and destruction

blood, bullets, bombs

time in pieces

peace love compassion understanding

values demanding a voice

are we ready

prepare for war

fight for peace

that elusive contradictory condition

peace in our time

make it real!
